The following essay is about J.R.R.Tolkien’s novel „The Hobbit“ and some of his other works like for example „The Lord of the Rings“ with special regard to the poems, songs and riddles he uses. But although these poems are not very profound they are important for the atmosphere in Tolkien’s books. They belong to „The Hobbit“ and Tolkien’s other books and underline certain situations. ... It is evident that he did not simply invent these poems but that he really thought worked them out. ... But this kind of archaic style of everything said and told has a higher distinctiveness in ‚The Lord of the Rings‘ than in ‚The Hobbit‘ maybe because the former one he wrote later. ...

Having a look at the riddles in „The Hobbit“ it becomes clear that they also play a very important role in the book because there are many of them and it seems almost like a kind of hobby or sport for the creatures to solve riddles. ... Gollum has been away from other human creatures so long that he has difficulties to solve some of the riddles for example the one with the sun and the daisies. ... That made the hobbit most dreadfully uncomfortable and scattered in his wits.“

But Bilbo does not really have a chance against Gollum who really likes riddles:

„Riddles were all he could think of. ... “

Tolkien uses these riddles because he wants to increase the tention. The riddles are like a kind of fight without weapons and blood.
