Scarlet Letter

Puritan America was a male dominated society. Women had very little voice in any of the matters. They were judged and dictated by the rules of the men. Hester Prynne became ever more intimate with these facts after she had committed her adulterous crime with the minister, Arthur Dimmesdale. Jailed while pregnant and forced to display ignominy with a distinctive symbol, Hester was treated in ways fit to perpetrators of more damaging crimes such as theft. The magistrates of this male dominated society decided that her sin of committing adultery was a tremendous shame to athe entire town. Hester was constantly tormented by these town leaders; these men made sure she was continually reminded of her crime with the use of the scarlet letter.
