Style is a customary manner of presenting printed material, including usage, punctuation, spelling, typography, and arrangement. ... The style that will be discussed is that of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre”, George Orwell’s “1984”, and Arthur C. Clarke’s “Childhood’s End”. ... Some scholars have even claimed that in publishing A Christmas Carol Dickens single-handedly invented the modern form of the Christmas holiday in England and the United States.
Charles Dickens’ has a unique style that has been coined by his fellow writers as the “Dicksensian style”. Dickens himself described his style for a student: “Dickensian’ is an adjective that describes my style and the general tone or feel of my stories. It has partly to do with my unique style of written English – expressively inventive, expansive, often witty and punning, always visually vivid and descriptive. ... ” 1
One element of style in “A Christmas Carol” is the creation of iconographic scenes. A Dickens critic Stephen Leacock points out that “A Christmas Carol” is “better known in scenes that at its full length” we recognized scrooge in his office with Crachit in his cell, without being told that its is a scene from Dickens’s story, and the image of Crachit holding tiny Tim on his shoulder has become indelibly fixed in our imagination that we can identify it in silhouette. ... This visual version of the carol represents Dickens’s sense of Christmas. 2
“A Christmas Carol” is divided into five sections called staves. Dickens uses the musical term “stave” because after all the story is a Christmas Carol. ... The first of the three spirits is the Ghost of Christmas Past, who makes Ebenezer Scrooge see how Christmas use to be when he was young. The next spirit to visit him is the Ghost of Christmas Present. This ghost represents charity, empathy, and the Christmas spirit. The final spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Future. ... 3
