Is there more than one hunger artist? Are we all hunger artists? The hunger artist, in “The Hunger Artist” by Franz Kafka, puts on an act trying to prove that he is imitating all of us. The hunger artist states, “I have to fast, I can’t help it. If I had found it (food that he liked), believe me, I would have made no fuss and stuffed myself like you or anyone else”. The world today gives us many choices and it is hard to choose just one thing. This one thing can be traditions, faiths, art, sculpture, and architecture. We have lost everything precious to us. We are left to wonder about each of them. We are left traveling back and thinking of what has been lost, which no longer nourishes us. This is when we realized that we are starving, not from fasting but from malnourishment. “How paradoxical this seems, loneliness and starvation in the midst of many living in abundance.” (11 Kluback) In the Hunger Artist, Kafka shows how people are put into isolation by society, not deliberately but unconsciously and that people have to come to this conclusion before it is too late and becomes a danger to the society. Most societies do not put constraints on our beliefs, not just religion but also art. For instance, the United States has the U.S. constitution, which contains the Bill of Rights, which lists all of our rights and freedoms. These freedoms include our right to choose our own religion.
