|
|
|
The Duke of Ephesus condemns Egeon, a merchant of Syracuse, to death for violating the ban of interstate travel between Ephesus and Syracuse. As he leads Egeon to his execution, he asks the man what his business is in Ephesus. Egeon tells the Duke that he is in search of his wife and one of his twin sons, who were separated from him over twenty years ago in a shipwreck. The other twin, who grew up with Egeon, left nearly eight years ago in search of the rest of his family. The Duke takes pity on Egeon and gives him until the end of the day to raise the money needed to save his head.
