1. Hawthorne’s ancestors were Puritan and they regarded him as an author of fiction, which was contrary to them. Hawthorne finds the writing to be therapeutic and practical they don’t. He considered his Puritan’s legacy both a blessing and a curse. Puritans were all about truth and didn’t believe in making up things. 2. Hawthorne felt like his time spent and the work he did in customhouse and the company of the other customhouse men has taught the narrator that it will be difficult to write so that the story will be interesting to all types of people; specially to those that are no longer young at heart. But he thinks of it as a challenge to try to tell Hester's story in a way that makes it both meaningful and emotionally affecting to all readers. 3. Hawthorne viewed his Puritan ancestry as both a blessing and a curse. He discovers writing to be practical which is against the Puritan ancestors' assertions. He also used the beliefs of Puritans in his story and a Puritan society. 4. In medias res means into the middle of the plot. Hawthorne gets into the middle of the plot right away. He introduces you and explains everything so you can understand what is going on in the middle of the narrative or plot. He definitely uses in medias res effectively. 5. I think in The Scarlet Letter Hawthorne plants a rosebush next to the prison door because it symbolic to the “A” on Hester’s chest. The “A” sticks out, like the rosebush sticks out next to a prison. Also how both the rosebush and Hester resist the kinds of fixed interpretation that the narrator associates with religion. One other thing is the fact of how the rosebush survives next to a prison is like how does Hester survive through all this turmoil. 6. I believe he was justified by publishing the “Custom House” as an introduction to The Scarlet Letter because it explains and gets into detail, it lets you know were he is coming from. The “Custom House” lets you understand how the story was founded. 7. Hester accepted her humility and she also was having flashbacks of old memories, for a while she felt like she was somewhere else and everything else vanished. Hester’s attitude was very calm but hesitant. Also while on the scaffold she sees her husband but doesn’t say anything, he didn’t want her too. When they were judging her and asking for the name of the father who bared the child in her arms she was very direct on not telling them his name. 8. Hawthorne uses isolation effectively by Hester being isolated from her town. She is in a cottage in the wilderness so not even a stranger of the town can see her and the scarlet letter on her bosom. Hester and Pearl are by themselves and only have each other. 9. Hester suffers isolation for her sin because wherever she goes people look down on her, therefore she isolates her self in the wilderness so not a single person besides her daughter can see her and the scarlet letter on her bosom. Hester keeps to herself so there is isolation for her sin. 10. Now days, in my time, I wouldn’t say it was just but back then I say that is was just because if it was such a sin then, living with the sin is better than her dying for it. She sees her punishment everyday not only the scarlet letter on her bosom but also in her daughter, who is the outcome of the sin. 11. The element of Hawthorne’s style that was greatly contributed to the extensive study of guilt was he always said guilt was in the heart always. No matter if anyone knows of your wronging you will always know, it will always be in you heart. 12. I say the controlling theme of The Scarlet Letter is guilt. Even if your guilt doesn’t show or is known of on the outside, you will always feel and have it on the inside.
