Scarlet Letter
Hester, Arthur, Roger and Pearl All stories, books and literature in general, have characters. These characters shape each other as the story continues. The Scarlet Letter, regarded as one of the first physiological novels, includes vast character significance that shapes the unfolding story. Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingsworth, Arthur Dimmesdale and Pearl Prynne all play key roles associated not only with the story plot, but also with the growth and development of each other. Hester Prynne is the supreme example of mental fortitude. When she is convicted of adultery, a tremendously impure crime in Puritan society, Hester must wear at scarlet letter “A” of shame upon her chest. The mark of adultery forces Hester away from the community, in a social sense. Although, not completely an outcast, Hester is looked upon with great dissatisfaction from the townspeople.
