Scarlet Letter

In the time period in which transcendentalists and anti-transcendentalists were introduced to the New World, people such as Nathaniel Hawthorne portrayed their beliefs and ideas in novels. For instance, Hawthorne, an anti-transcendentalist, inputted his ideas of anti-transcendentalism in his popular novel, The Scarlet Letter. In it, he shows the intertwining of good and evil in human nature. He used revenge as one of the ways to intertwine the good and evil. As a matter of fact, Hawthorne used many ways to show the relationships of good and evil in humans. For example, Chillingworthˇ¦s hopes of plotting revenge against the horrible person who caused Hester to receive public punishment and would not show his face because of the fact that this person who Hester had an affair with was letting Hester take all the punishment. In addition, Hester also had a good and evil side to her in the novel, but was seen differently as Chillingworthˇ¦s human nature. Dimmesdale had a side of evilness to him too, even if he was the townˇ¦s minister, who everyone thought as a clean and respectful gentleman. As mentioned earlier, Roger Chillingworth is a good example of someone who is intertwined with good and evil. In the beginning of the novel, Chillingworth was depicted as a nice, caring husband, and standing up for his wife, who is charged with adultery and punished publicly.
