Scarlet Letter Entry 1

June 15, 1642 Dear Diary, Today was the day that I had been dreading since Hester Prynne was arrested. She had been arrested for adultery, a crime of which I was equally guilty. Although the community was ignorant to my sin, I felt as if everyone were not only judging Hester but I as well. As Hester was brought out and into the glaring daylight, I stood hidden from the others and listened to the gossip that was being passed around bitterly. Everyone seemed to concur that Hester had received a far too merciful sentence. In a way, this was true, the normal punishment for such a crime as adultery was indisputably death, but in Hester’s case, she was just as much an adulterer as she was a victim. She left for the new world before her husband because he had some arrangements to make before he ventured to the new world. He was to follow Hester to the new world shortly but never showed up and was therefore assumed dead. Considering this, it was decided instead of death, standing on the scaffold for a period of three hours and wearing an “A” on her dress for the rest of her natural life was a more just punishment.
