The Canterbury Tales

1. There are many different instances in “The Knight’s Tale” in which chance or coincidence either alter or complicate the plot of the story. Three significant instances have stood out to me. The first is in the beginning as Duke Theseus returns home with his wife and there are, by chance, ladies weeping on the side of the road. Because of these ladies, the Duke went to Thebes and had he not, he would have never found Arcite and Palamon there and the story would have never happened. The second chance incident was when the Duke randomly decided to go out hunting right next to the clearing that Arcite and Palamon happened to be dueling. Had he not, Arcite and Palamon would have never been found out by the Duke and Theseus would not have been able to offer the solution. The third incident that chance played a role in was after Arcite had won the battle. The crowd made a loud noise and Arcite’s horse reared and Arcite was bucked off on his head. Because of this chance accident, Palamon now gets the girl. 2. Palamon prays to Venus, the God of Love. The significance of this choice is that it shows that Palamon loves Emily and is in this battle for Emily not just the victory. This choice reflects his personality in that he is the passive, sentimental, lover type. Arcite prays to Mars the God of War. This shows that he wants to win the war more than win Emily. His personality is more courageous, fierce, noble fighter. Emily prays to Diana the God of Virginity.
