The Jungle By Upton Sinclair 1. Genre • How would the work be classified as to genre? Social criticism and political fiction • What expectation do you have about such a work? I would like to learn about the hardships of immigrants and have a better understanding about it. • What does the title suggest about the people, events, and ideas of the work? The title suggests that the book may be chaotic, situations may be difficult, and the people may struggle. Survival of the fittest may come into play. 2. Setting • What is the setting or situation? The Jungle takes place in the early 1900’s in Packington, the meatpacking sector of Chicago. • How might that be important to the outcome of the story? This might be important because the book is about immigrants in the early 1900’s. They came to America with no money, in hope for a better life for themselves and their family. They are willing to work for cheap, which may have an influence on the events in the book. 3. Point of View • From whose point of view is the story being told? The story is being told in the third person point of view. It focuses on what Jurgis feels, learns, and experiences. The narrator also provides commentary on the social forces that affect the characters lives. This is used as knowledge for Jurgis in the future. • How might the point of view affect the story? Through this point of view, we are able to understand what happens in Jurgis’ life. It also helps us to understand the decisions he makes and why he makes them. We are able to feel his pain, and understand what he is going through. 4. Characters • Who are the significant characters in the work? The significant characters are Jurigs Rudkus, Ona Lukoszaite, Teta Elzbieta Lukoszaite, Marija Berczynskas, Phil Conner, Dede Antanas Rudkus and Antanas Rudkus. • What are they like in terms of identity, personality, behavior? - Jurgis Rudkus is a strong, determined individual with a faith in the American dream of self- betterment.
