Totalitarianism in Nineteen Eighty-Four

Published in 1949, George Orwell¡¯s great book Nineteen Eighty-Four presents a horrifying picture of social life in a totalitarian state, which deprives an individual of all basic freedoms. In the book, George Orwell launches a fierce attack on totalitarianism and moreover, sounds the alarm of any possible authoritarian regime in the near-future of the world. In his essay ¡°Why I Write¡± he states clearly that ¡°every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism.¡± And Nineteen Eighty-Four will be interpreted from the viewpoint of totalitarianism, focusing on its control of an individual¡¯s mind and body, mainly by means of advanced technology like telescreens and microphones, and by psychological devices like Newspeak and doublethink.
As a form of government, totalitarianism ¡°theoretically permits no individual freedom and seeks to subordinate all aspects of individual life to the authority of the government. ... But in Nineteen Eighty-Four the ruling party of Oceania monitors and controls every aspect of human life, of which the control of its citizens¡¯ bodies is most striking. ...

Though in Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell portrays a world full of unbelievable oppression, cruelty and terror, it should by no means be taken as a science fiction, made up of mere imagination. ...
