In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a novel by Mark Twain that takes place in 1830's antebellum America, the main character, a young boy name Huckleberry Finn, goes on several life learning and dangerous adventures down the Mississippi River with a runaway slave named Jim. During Huck and Jim’s long journey down the Mississippi River their relationship prospers from just using each other for company to a strong, caring friendship with both ups and downs along the way. Throughout the novel Huck’s feelings about what he knows and has experienced about slavery affects his relationship with Jim. For example, when Huck hears Jim cheering about almost being free, he says, “It most froze me to hear such talk. He would not ever dared to talk such in his life before. Just see what a difference it made in him the minute he judged he was about free ... I was sorry to hear Jim say that, it was such lowering of him”(79). Huck has doubts about not turning Jim in. At this point in the novel Huck still believes in the institution of slavery, he personally thinks Jim has no right to be free and therefore he also thinks he is helping Jim commit a crime.
