The story The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman is about a girl named Lyra Belecque and her Daemon. The setting of this book is Jordan College in Oxford, England and the Arctic. The main character in the book is Lyra, who is a young girl, about eleven years old who is an orphaned and was supposedly of royal birth. Lyra lives at Jordan College with the scholars. She sets out to find her friend Roger and her uncle, Lord Aserial who were kidnapped by thieves known as Gobblers. On her journey, Lyra is accompanied by a Daemon named Pantalaimon. A Daemon is a spirit that accompanies a person throughout their life, sharing thoughts and changing forms. Once the person has reached adulthood, the Daemon assumes a permanent form.
