The Cathcher In The Rye
|

|
To be affected by the society in which you live is presumably inevitable. Most people live their lives in accordance with their environment, thus, correspond to the ideals and standards around them. At a young age many children are exposed to an environment that places an immense importance on money and, therefore, grow accustomed to it. They are swept up into the whirlwind of a fast paced life, striving toward materialistic and monetary wealth. In a sense they have lost their naiveté and innocence. Exemplified in the novel The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger, the main character deals with the struggle of being a non-conformist in such a conformist society. The character of Holden Caufield is complex, but to be put simply he is a “real” person living in a “phony” world.
