The most obvious reasons that people attend college/university are related to career development. Many careers require a university education, and over the past several decades, it has become more and more difficult to get good jobs without a university-level education. Anyone who wants to teach, work in most medical fields, work in business, and so on, must have a university education. In fact, in more and more cases, a graduate-level degree is desirable or required. In my case, I worked as an occupational therapy aide after graduating from high school, but in order to have more responsibility and do the type of work I wanted to do, I had to become a registered occupational therapist -- and that required a bachelor's degree.
