The Yellow Integrator

In many stories in literature and especially in the realm of short fiction, there are people who interact, critique, or modify certain aspects of their cultures. They may work with these aspects, make judgments and reservations of the aspects, or go completely the other way and deny and defy the aspects of these cultures. An example of a character that performs these three actions is the narrator in the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” In this story, the narrator interacts with aspects of her culture by timidly allowing the treatments of her times, critiques these aspects by revealing her feelings towards these treatments, and modifies these aspects by eventually defying the treatments and doing as she pleases.
