The Cay

Characters: Phillip, a young boy, who is excited when the German’s invade Curacao until him and his mom have to leave for safety although his father can not leave with him because of his job. Phillip’s mother, a loving women who cares about her son and tries to get her and her son to safe land. Timothy, an old West Indian seaman. Place: At the beginning the Phillip and his family are living in Willemstad, on the island of Curacao. But, then Phillip ends up on a cay during World War 2. Time: The 1940’s, during World War 2. Problem: The boat that Phillip and his mother are taking to get to the United States in torpedoed. Goal: Their goal is to survive and be found so Phillip can be reunited with his family. Events: 1. Phillip’s mother doesn’t think it’s safe to live in Curacao anymore because the German’s are starting to attack islands near Phillip. Phillip’s mother thinks that Phillip and her should go to the United States to be safe.
