For my independent reading project I chose to do different masks of manhood portrayed in the story. Throughout the entire book male characters are trying to hide their true selves. They use different techniques to mask who it is they really are. Each mask represents an emotion or action a character used in The Sun Also Rises to hide behind. Almost everyone in this book in an alcoholic. It doesn’t seem to matter where they are or whom they are with, they just drink to escape reality. Drinking allows the characters to say what they feel, and once it comes out they deny that it is the truth. Jake, the narrator often is found in his room with the spins.
