The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne's use of setting in The Scarlet Letter plays a pivotal role in the maturing of the characters and theme. Throughout the novel the recurring description of the character's surroundings help the reader understand the nature of the characters themselves who in turn reveal the theme. The main settings throughout the novel are the market place and the forest. These two locations are where all the major happenings take place, and the main characters thrive. They reveal many unknowns and keep many secrets, because the market place is a public affair and the forest is a private one. Hester Prynne, in scene one of the market place, is called out of the prison and onto the scaffold where we are given our first character analysis of her. The scaffold tells her story of sin and passion to the world, while all the other townspeople hold their sin safe on the ground. Hester represented everyone's untold sins. The preachers who were supposedly holy are displayed on a balcony above the scaffold. A balcony of any kind is used for an enhanced view, and is obvious to all. These clergymen perched on the balcony want to be seen by everyone and pretend to be performing their duties for God by over seeing the affairs of the townspeople.
