Things Fall Apart
|

|
Things Fall Apart “Things fall apart”, by Chinua Achebe, portrays imperialism at its best. The story is set at the Ibo village of Umuofia during the time of early European expansion in Africa. It’s a story of the drastic changes faced by the African people as the British tried to spread their ways of life, especially their government and religion. Many think that imperialism, the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations is a good thing, and is sometimes done with good incentive. But I feel that most times it is done with the human nature of self-interest. While reading about the European colonization of Nigeria it seemed like it was a story of how large, more powerful, countries invade smaller, weaker countries to gain world dominance. By doing so they force their culture upon the weaker countries in attempt to destroy that weaker culture and add more life to their own.
