The Outsiders “Nothing gold can stay." (Robert Frost). This means nothing that is perfect will last. Johnny Cade realized this. Johnny is a character from the novel, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, who was beaten by a group of people known as the Socs. As teenagers grew up they were categorized as Socs or Greasers. Socs are the upper half, the ones with the money who could afford to buy nice clothes and to go to college, who have cars, and never get in trouble with the cops. Greasers are the ones who families are poor and can’t send them to college or buy them nice cars. Johnny was a greaser. Johnny was also constantly nervous. He was also a very sensitive person; he was very brave when he needed to be. There were many daily occurrences that contributed to Johnny always being so nervous. This is the main basis for Johnny's nervousness is because Johnny had been jumped and violently beaten by a gang of Socs. As Johnny, Ponyboy, and Two-bit where leaving the drive-in movie theatre, Bob, the Soc who jumped Johnny, pulled up in his car and Johnny became very nervous.
