This Side of Paradise

F. Scott Fitzgerald gives us an important piece of literature in the “quest” novel, This Side of Paradise. He introduces us to a young boy named Amory who, from childhood, is looking to examine his role in life. Throughout the novel Amory meets many people who influence this change, maybe the most influential are the woman of his life. The woman, I believe, are what shapes Amory into what he is as we see him at the end of the book. The use of the name Amory hints at the importance of his love affairs in his own spiritual growth. Amory revokes romantic love in European tradition. The unusual name Amory brings strongly to mind the word for love in all romance languages, “Amor” in Spanish, and “Amour” in French. Whether this is Fitzgerald’s way of giving us a sense of foreshadowing, to look more closely to the woman he encounters, I am not clear if that was his original intent. Amory is shaped at a very early age by his unique mother to such a degree he feels different around others his own age. Also from this early age Amory is both attracted to and repelled by romantic involvement with woman. Myra is the first woman of Amory’s young childhood that he encounters. This “relationship”, gives us a good sense of who Amory is and just how his mother has influenced his behavior. He encourages Myra to go with him to the lounge and wait for the other kids so they can be alone. After little encouragement they do and end up kissing. Amory seems to be searching for a romantic moment, but after the kiss is rude and disregards Myra’s feelings for him. This is our first insight to Amory egotism, and also sets the trend for his other failed relationships with woman as the novel continues. Amory next falls in love with Isabelle. They spend a magical time on campus together when Isabelle comes to visit Amory at Princeton and confess their undying love to another.
