"The Unknown Citizen," by W. ... Throughout the passage, the speaker, a government bureaucrat, lists facts about the citizen’s life which he believes prove that the deceased was a valuable person. ... This is potently illustrated by the reference to the citizen as "JS/07/378. ... "The Unknown Citizen" is obviously comparable to the image of the Unknown Soldier, the nameless victim of World War I whose government-sponsored memorial represents the countless soldiers who died in battle. The Unknown Citizen represents the common man, singular in his desires and attitudes, respected for the same reasons. He is unknown in the sense that his government and perhaps his peers were unaware of his true emotions and ideals, only looking at his exterior image as he did what he believed he was suppose to do, like an automaton constrained by society’s expectations.
