He can be identified as an American writer for a number of things, one of which being his American lifestyle. When he was but 15 years old, he wrote weekly articles for money which funded his college expenses, demonstrating how he could conform to the capitalist American society. He was born poor, but with the success of The Jungle, he gradually managed to make a decent fortune, indicative of the American ideal of “rags to riches”.
