In The Great Gatsby each character has their own idea of the American dream. A person’s idea of the American dream is influenced by a number of things, one being the time in which they live. The Great Gatsby being set in the 1920’s during a time of false happiness when wealth meant power and power equaled success reflects the American dream as a life consisting of excess and greed.
