Wife of Bath Defender of Women

|
The wife of Bath views the world by seeing the truth about the roles of women in society and in relationships. Its apparent that her main hope is to see women become the dominate force in society, but in doing this, she also attempts to balance the power held by men and women. At times, the wife seems more like an angry little child who constantly expresses her unhappiness with the way things are. She does, however, give a number of intelligent examples and makes many good points explaining how her society is unfair to women. She looks beneath the culture and sees how women themselves have added to the problem. By being an observer and acting on her observations of society, the wife of Bath is a true defender of women who believes that women should have control, as well as choice and power.
Having been married to five different husbands, the wife is looked down on by other men. ... She also says that she is aware that many holy men have had more than one wife and states:
I know very well that Abraham was a holy man,
And Jacob too, as far as I can see, And each of them had more than two wives,
And so did many another holy man.
