wisdom or ignorance (lord of the flies)

The long jump performance of the athlete has been analysed using biomechanical principles. Biomechanics is the study of human movement; the biomechanical concepts which have been used to judge this athlete’s performance are force, balance, motion, impulse and momentum. Each phase of the athlete’s performance will be analysed with the related biomechanical principles which are involved to that particular stage of long jump. There are four phases to a long jump performance: run-up, take-off, flight and landing. The single most important factor in a long jump performance is the execution of a fast, accurate, and controlled approach run, to allow the athlete to arrive at the take-off point prepared to drive into the jump. There must be a gradual increase in speed while approaching the take-off board but only for approximately the first three quarters of the total run-up. “Momentum can be seen as a measure of how much motion an object possesses. When a body is moving, it has a certain mass and velocity. Momentum is seen as the product of these two components,” (Ann Kershaw et al., 1995). For the last few strides there must be no impulse and the athlete’s momentum must be maintained because one of the aims of the run-up is to reach the maximum controllable momentum at take-off. The longer it takes for the athlete to push their foot off the take-off board the greater the change in momentum. Change in momentum is labeled as impulse. In the penultimate (or next to last) stride, the body's center of mass must be lowered in order to attain the optimum position for the take-off.
