In the stories of A Good Man Is Hard to Find, A Late Encounter with the Enemy, and Greenleaf by Flannery O'connor features a major family relationship in each of the stories. These relationships have a very related yet common idea represented throughout the stories. The central character, General Sash of A Late Encounter With the Enemy is a very old man who has lived up to hundred and four years. "He lived with his granddaughter, Sally Poker Ash, who was sixty-two years old and who prayed every night on her knees that he would live until her graduation from college. The General didn’t give two slaps for her graduation but he never doubted he would live for it." Almost immediately there is a indication that General Sash did not care about her granddaughters graduation as much she did. He didn't remember the past nor did he want to learn about the future. He forgot everything about the past, even the face or name of his wife. He knew so little about the past it seemed as if he was not even alive in the past. But there was a event in which he would not forget, "There was only one event in the past that had any the only thing that he thought was significant for him and that he spoke about: that was twelve years ago when he had received the general's uniform and had been in the premiere. "(512) This was a major pride in his life. He felt passionate when wearing the uniform. But this cut short the concern over his granddaughter in which was extremely excited for her grandfather to come to the graduation. O'conner stated about Sally Poker that if his grandfather died before her graduation she would have died herself.
