Z for Zachariah

“ Z for Zachariah ” “ Z for Zachariah ” by Robert C. O’Brien is a novel about survival and hope for the future. For me it is an enthralling novel told in diary form by a teenage girl called Ann Burden. The novel is about Ann trying to live with the possessive, stranger Mr Loomis after a nuclear war. In this essay, I will explain how the writer creates a sense of tension in his description of the relationship between Ann and Mr Loomis. The tension between Ann and Mr Loomis starts in the opening chapters of this novel, when Ann notices that black smoke is coming closer and closer to her valley. The author uses first person narrative to show Ann’s feelings and experiences. Ann has mixed feelings about the black smoke. At first she feels excited and happy because she will not be alone anymore, but she then feels anxious and tense as she knows the stranger may harm her. The author uses foreshadowing as the black smoke suggests that Ann is in danger because of Mr Loomis’ arrival.
