African American Literature is a direct result of the oppression black people faced each and everyday. ... The contributions that African American Literature has made to American society can be seen in everyday life. ... Saying, “I want to talk about the experiences of a misplaced generation, of a misplaced people of an extremely complex confused society,” this was Claude Brown’s childhood, as he grew up in the perilous streets of Harlem, a childhood that is “a vivid picture of street life in Harlem,” which is depicted in his autobiography, Manchild in the Promised Land.
Claude Brown was born on February 23, 1937 in Harlem, New York. ... His father Henry Lee Brown often beat Claude for his defiant nature. As a child Claude was very true to his roots of Harlem, he would always take part in the evils of the ghetto. ... Brown’s relationship with his father was very poor, in fact the only real quality time they spent together was over a few beers, while Claude was underage. ... She would have heart to heart talks with Claude trying to make him less defiant, but never succeeded. ... In defiance Claude would just have his friends steal him clothes and shoes so that he could go out for a few nights without returning home. ...

When Claude Brown said “Fortunate enough to attain the improbable old age of 46 in a culture and life style where the vast majority of his teenage peers are dead, killed before they reached 30” (Brown, 2). ... The critics often raved about Brown’s book Manchild in the Promised Land David Dewitt said the time period of it was “Manchild in the Promised Land, Claude Brown’s acclaimed autobiography of 1950’s New York, down to its heart” (Dewitt, 1). ... Harthshorne talks about the theme as “it is a prime example of a form of literature with a long tradition in American Culture: the rags to riches story” (Harthshorne, 2). ... Likewise Martin Tucker advocated the subject matter “Claude Brown’s Miracle is that from a childhood spent amidst crime, poverty, dope, promiscuity, violence and perversion, he managed to wrest himself into a belief that could be different and better than that” (Tucker, 1). ...
