The word Cherokee possibly means “principle people” or perhaps “people of different speech” and they have a long, meaningful past in North Carolina (SCIway, 2003). ... On this Trail of Tears, in 1838, under military guard, an estimated 13,000 Cherokee left North Carolina on foot. ... They were ultimately given land in western North Carolina and their descendants today are federally recognized as the Eastern Band of Cherokees. ...
