Broken Arrow by Delmer Daves

“Broken Arrow” by Delmer Daves I felt that “Broken Arrow” was surprisingly sensitive to the Native American way of life, especially considering the time in which the movie was written and directed (1950). Any bias present in the film seemed to be aimed at making ‘white man’ look bad, whereas the ‘Indians’ are elevated to almost supernatural status. Being a ‘Hollywood’ film, there are many exaggerations and imaginative ‘short cuts’ used to make the story fit into a 93-minute time frame and still tell the story that Daves wanted to be told. Even so, I felt it gave a remarkably fair presentation of a part of American history that many people would rather forget. One is encouraged to like certain characters in the film, including the characters played by James Stewart (Tom Jeffords), Jeff Chandler (Cochise), and Debra Paget (Sonseeahray).
