Margot Fonteyn was born May 18th in Regatte, Surrey, England in 1919. ... Fonteyn made her own stage debut at the age of four, as a “wind” in a babies’ ballet with her brother Felix featured as a principle dancer. ... Fonteyn’s first solo role, however, was the Young Treginnis in de Valoiss The Haunted Ballroom. When Markova, the companys first ballerina, left in 1935, Fonteyn worried with the rest of the dancers, and most of the audience, about who could ever replace her. ... Fonteyn grew into being one of the most amazing dancers in her time.
By the time the war broke out in 1939 Fonteyn had danced Aurora, Giselle, and Odette/Odile, and - perhaps more importantly - had already created half a dozen roles for Ashton. ... And there was their opening night performance of Sleeping Beauty showed how far Fonteyn, still only 26, had traveled on the path to prima ballerina. After Fonteyn’s role as Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, her dancing was characterized by “technical proficiency and musical sensitivity”.
