In 1926, the woman who came to be viewed as the symbol of success and perfection was born. She was radiant, talented, and lovable. Marilyn Monroe was the fantasy of men and the inspiration for women. When she was 17, she began modeling. Twentieth Century Fox signed her and she became a star. To the public, it seemed as if Marilyn had it all. She was a beautiful actress who married famous and accomplished men, Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller. However, the truth is Marilyn never had the perfect Hollywood life that was the public perception. Monroe was a child in a grown-up world. Twentieth Century Fox made millions off her and she only made $700 a week. Monroe’s beauty only ran skin deep. Her mental health suffered like her mother’s and grandmother’s. America’s ideal woman showed society that all women have to be is good looking. The rest did not matter. The truth is if Marilyn Monroe were not seen as an innocent victim she would not be the icon she is today. She made women think they had power but they were all just blondes on a Hollywood string. In Marilyn Monroe’s short lived life she made 30 films and was loved by an entire nation.
