Capital Punishment Versus Life Imprisonment
“Death and Justice,” by Edward I. Koch, is a very conservative outlook on the death penalty. In this essay Koch argues the fact that capital punishment is not only a disincentive for crime but also shows the value of life. Koch gives arguments for and against capital punishment. Having been in politics for 22 years, he states, “I have weighed their objections carefully. I still support the death penalty” (488). My opinion on capital punishment is much like that of Koch’s. Even though many people have objected to this issue with their opinions and ideas, punishment is necessary.
The author’s article is one that shows how fragile life is and how easy it can be taken by those who have little regard for human life, besides their own. ... Shaw both had a completely different outlook on the topic; however, these views changed once they themselves were threatened with the death penalty. ... Shaw said, “ ‘Killing is wrong when I did it. ... I hope you have the courage and moral strength to stop the killing’ ” (Koch 487). ... The death penalty helps to acknowledge the fact that life really is
valuable. The first major point Koch addresses is that the death penalty is said to be “barbaric” (488). It is barbaric, not by the method in which it is done, but by the death itself.
