In his studies of eighteen case studies (Six were male and twelve were female), Freud came to the conclusion that there was a shared element in the illness of hysteria. ... For example in the case of the young, happily married woman who sometimes awoke in the morning in with her limbs rigid, her mouth open and her tongue protruding. Freud could not come to any conclusion with the case until he spoke to her family doctor and it transpires that when the patient was a young girl she shared a room with her Grandmother and the Governess whom she was very found of. ... A good example of this would be in the case of the elderly lady suffering from attacks of anxiety. In this case it transpired that during childhood is was reading a book on the sexually process that she found quite revolting and was unable to carry on reading the book.
