Diabetes

Diabetes runs in the family. Most of the adults have diabetes. It is ironic though because our family owns haciendas all over Negros and our main production focuses on sugarcanes. My grandfather, who was utterly weak for several years because of the failure of both his kidneys caused by the uncontrolled diabetes, finally agreed with us concerned family members that he should take into consideration the proposal of several doctors that he should have a kidney transplant. His transplant took place on the Immaculate Conception of last year, 2002. The long operation, which seemed to have lasted forever, kept us all under the anxiety of our grandfather coming out from a successful operation. I remember my mother telling me how my grandmother had some sort of memory loss right after her beloved husband had entered the operating room. It was probably the hardest for her, being with our grandfather through thick and thin for more or less three months, going in an out three different hospitals, all under pressure of our grandfather's health. Months before the operation the news about our grandfather scattered rapidly among all our relatives and among their friends. The search was on for the donor. It was difficult considering the unique blood type of my grandfather. Luckily, as soon as my grandfather's niece heard about the news, she right away took the blood test and miraculously passed seven out of the ten tests given to a donor to see if he or she may be qualified. For several never-ending and exhausting weeks, my grandfather underwent dialysis at least twice a week.
