The United States Should Continue the War On Drugs Drug abuse affects millions of US citizens including children and law-abiding citizens. The United States has taken many steps to solve this problem including strict drug enforcement policies and drug prohibition. David Boaz's article, “The United States Should Abandon the War On Drugs”, states that the war on drugs and prohibition is unlawful, too expensive, ineffective, and should be abandon (Boaz 105). However, this author's statements are misguided because the current drug laws and policies are successful and the United States has the right and the responsibility to continue its war on drugs through drug enforcement and prohibition. A drug defined as a substance other than food intended to affect the structure or function of a physiological system such as the human body. A drug addict is defined as a person who depends on a drug for his daily functioning. There are four major categories of drugs: depressants, stimulants, hallucigens, and narcotics. The most commonly abused drugs in the United States are tobacco, marijuana, and cocaine. Drug abuse is as old as mankind itself. Humans first started experimenting with drugs as home remedies and eventually discovered alcohol and other more harmful drugs. During the Civil War, morphine was commonly used among wounded soldiers and many veterans came home with an addiction to the drug. By the early 1900's there were an estimated 250,000 drug addicts in the United States (History of Drug Abuse). The problems of addiction were slowly recognized in the United States and the first ever drug law was established in San Francisco in 1875 when opium dens were outlawed. In 1919 the alcohol prohibition was made the eighteenth amendment to the constitution but was repealed in 1933.
