... Much research has been done that has shown that single parent households have a strong correlation with delinquency. ¡§The topic of broken homes has been a central part of delinquency theory since the emergence of criminology in the 19th century,¡¨ (Juby).
Whether the delinquent was: born out of wedlock; went through a divorce; his/her parents are in separation; has a single parent in the household of the opposite sex; or because of only having one parent in the household there is a low income, are all characteristics associated with single parent households. Every last one of these characteristics contributes to the reasons why juveniles become delinquent due to single parent households. ... Also in 1987, Raymond Knight and Robert Prentky studied 108 violent rapists, all repeat offenders, and attained results that sixty percent of the subjects studied came from single-parent homes. ... Parental conflict precedes, and is responsible for, both the broken home and the delinquency (Juby). ... Among houses dominated by mothers only, thirty-five percent of the households had children who used drugs frequently (Muehlenberg). ... In this case the father becomes an important factor that is missing from the family structure to keep children out of bad crowds and committing delinquency. The highest rates of problem behavior are found among white male adolescents in single-mother families (Thomas). However, in the case of black male adolescents, evidence has shown that fewer behavior problems come when the nonresident fathers are not involved in single-mother families (Thomas). ... Research shows that delinquency was three to four times more frequent in the care of only their mother. Another study found that eighty percent of preschool children, admitted to psychiatric hospitals, came from single mother homes; approximately three percent were from single father homes (Grace).
