I disagree with the theory that Americans lack connectedness because of overdependence on the automobile. ... If not for the automobile allowing people from different neighborhoods and different cultures to interact, a citizen living in a predominantly white neighborhood may have little to no dealings with an African American Citizen. ... For example, an African American and a White citizen could cross paths at a ball game or a movie theater outside of their neighborhoods, where they wouldn’t otherwise see each other. ... Without the automobile the decline in American activity would be steep. ... This enhances mingling among citizens and connectedness, and the convenience of the Automobile is highly responsible. ... American culture has changed over the years, and the automobile has risen to meet our expanded needs.
The Automobile enhances American connectedness in several ways. ... If not for the Automobile, American activity would decline, and the limited exposure citizens would have to cultures outside of their surrounding area could breed divisiveness.
