In reading Dirk Johnson, I find the classic, stereotypical situation of a middle class income white family, who has been forced to alter their lives drastically because of hard luck in the job market of the man of the family, usually the primary money earner. There are many facets of change to a family’s life, which occur when the struggling middle class income is stopped. First of all, a middle class income is just that, enough money to make ends meet, as the saying goes. ... The support needed for maintaining a modest home, to be able to enjoy watching your children enjoying their own bedrooms and having friends over the house to show what they have, being in competition with their friends of middle class status. ... The children can also be involved in poorer school advancement, venting hostilities through violence, and feeling they can’t keep up with the school activities of their middle class peers, whose parents can afford the costs.
