Urban sprawl is the uncontrolled spreading of built up areas into the countryside. Urban sprawl was first identified in the 1930s. There are many problems associated with urban sprawl, including: the surrounding countryside being destroyed as cities spread, an increase in air pollution as more people commute to the city centre to work, parts of the inner city becoming neglected and land being wasted, farms and recreational areas being lost and the hydrological properties of river catchments being altered. The only real benefit of urban sprawl is that more land is made available for development, creating more living space.
