Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas was an impressionist painter of the late nineteenth century. Though Degas did paintings on numerous subjects, it his works on ballerinas that most are accustomed with. The reason for this is that out of all the paintings he did during his lifetime, the subject Degas covered the most was women, especially Danseurs. This fact is one that baffles many scholars; why did Degas have this ÒobsessionÓ with the female form? ... Edgar Degas was a celibate most of his life, many remark on this because at the time it was unheard of for a healthy man to not marry. The speculated reasons for this were many, perhaps Degas was a secret homosexual, or a masturbator, or a libertine. ... Perhaps a masturbator was exactly what Degas was, for why else would he paint pictures of females in ways that no other painter had even tried.
