TACTICAL ERROR? A certain, non league, Scottish team, going by the name of Cumbernauld, once took the great Kenny Dalglish on loan from Celtic in 1969. For a few brief months this team had a player who would go on to be one of the worlds most feared strikers. And where did Cumbernauld play him? In goal of course!!! TOP OF PAGE BRIEFCASE AIDS IN GOAL! Here is one of the most famous stories in Uruguayan foot balling history. I wouldn't blame you if you had never heard of it though as it was from quite a while back in 1930. A Nacional player had hit the ball just wide of the right post and out of play. The ball then bounced back onto the field to another waiting Nacional player who calmly placed it into the back of the net. The referee who was standing a way off allowed the goal as he thought the ball had just bounced back off the post. And how did the ball bounce back onto the pitch? Well a briefcase, left by one of the games camera men, was next to the post and is what the ball rebounded back into play with!!! TOP OF PAGE HELMET THROWN AT LINESMAN! Here's a story from not too long ago. It happened during 1996 during a Penarol/Danubio game. The Penarol fans were upset at the fact that their team was losing 1-0 with only several minutes to go. They began to throw all kinds of things down at the pitch (Rocks, bottles, etc) but what finally made the referee abandon the match was the sight of his linesman down after being hit by a motorbike helmet!!! TOP OF PAGE PHYSIO SENT OFF! At a non league English club, that will remain anonymous, a physio started abusing the games referee after a dirty tackle on one of his players. The abuse became so bad that the physio was abruptly shown the red card and sent to have an early bath!!! TOP OF PAGE CUNNING BACKPASS? Now here's a story you may have heard of. It happened during a game between Liverpool FC and Southampton, in 1987. The game was going Liverpool's way and so they decided to calm it down a little by passing the ball around the defence. In his wisdom, Ronnie Whealan decided to pass the ball back to Bruce Grobbelar in goal, but instead of a simple pass Ronnie goes and lobs Brucey from 60 yards!!! TOP OF PAGE PLAYER ARRESTED FOR ON PITCH ROBBERY! In the 1991 Derby between the two biggest sides in Uruguay an unusual robbery took place. The incident involved Nacionals Dely Valdez and the Penarol defender Goncalves. Valdez was well known in Uruguay for wearing gold chains and other jewellery on the pitch. The two players, Valdez and Goncalves, were struggling with each other as a corner kick was about to take place when Goncalves sneakily ripped off one of Valdez's gold chains and hid it in his sock. Nobody in the stadium or on the pitch saw the incident and if it wasn't for a TV camera with caught the theft Goncalves may have gotten away with it. But after notifying the police, Goncalves was arrested outside the dressing rooms. He was arrested but later the charges were dropped as he had given the chain back. You'd have thought that with all the money footballers earned they wouldn't have to steal!!! TOP OF PAGE LOST IN THE MIST! A couple of years ago there was a story in the paper about a Cambridgeshire league match that was played one winter in typically poor conditions. After about ten minutes the fog came down so thickly that visibility was reduced to about half the length of the pitch and so the referee decided to abandon the match.
