George Orwell is the pen name for author Eric Blair, who is famous for such works as Animal Farm and 1984. He was born in 1903, to a British family in India, which at the time was a part of the British Empire. His father was an agent in the Opium Department of the Indian Civil Service. While the Blair family was not very rich, they led a content lifestyle.
