... Television has an important role in helping the weak and easily influenced minds of children to develop certain gender roles and behavior traits. In the past, these influences, which dictate how we should behave in a normal society, have emanated from our family; however, in todays world, the influences these institutions have seem to be declining as our children’s ideas of gender roles are being negative influenced by television.
Traditionally the family has always being the number 1 source of gender in our society. We as humans learn everything we know about being gender from our family members, mostly our parents. Children learn how to be accepted members of society from their parents and other family members. According to Holly Devor, in her essay “Becoming Members of Society: Learning the Social Meanings of Gender, ““as children, and later adults, learn the rules of membership in society, they come to see themselves in terms they have learned from the people around them” (414). Parents strongly influence the gender role development of children by passing on their own beliefs of gender. From the time a child is born their parents idea of gender is being passed down. ... Children’s clothing and toys reflect their parents’ gender expectation. ... The toys parents give to their children also influence gender.
