Communication Date: September 15th, 2003 HALL’S DISTANCES Communication Skill Defined: “Edward Hall (1959, 1966) distinguishes four distances that define the type of relationship between people and identifies the various messages that each distance communicates.” “In intimate distance, ranging from actual touching to 18 inches, the presence of the other individual is unmistakable.” “Personal distance, refers to the protective “bubble” that defines your personal space, which measures from 18 inches to 4 feet.” “At social distance, ranging from 4 to 12 feet, you lose the visual detail you have at personal distance.” “Public distance, measuring from 12 to more than 25 feet, protects you.” (Joseph A.
