How does attribution bias affect eye witness testimony
|

... It is this, the process of deciding who or what is responsible for a crime which causes attribution bias.
There are four parts to attribution bias; Fundamental attribution error, Hedonic relevance, Actor-observer effect, and Self-serving bias. ... This can affect eye witness testimony because if the witness is close to the victim in some way then they are more likely to make dispositional attributions to the criminal rather than situational attributions which could then result in bias. This could also work the other way where the witness is close to the criminal and so is more likely to blame the crime on situational attributions. ... This type of bias can greatly effect the eye witness testimony and make it more likely for a jury to see the defendant as in the wrong as if the witness is an observer then they are more likely to blame dispositional attributions to the crime when infact it may not have been the defendants fault. Also if the testimony is from the actor then they may blame the situation on situational attributions when they may have been in the wrong.
