If You Only Knew

“If Only You Knew” It was mid-summer. Megan was going on a mission trip with her youth group to Graystown, Pennsylvania. She was anxious as to how many children would be in her class for the Vacation Bible School day camp that her youth group would run. This was her second mission trip with the youth group, and she was a little older and wiser when it came to knowing just what to do. They arrived on a Saturday evening, unpacked their bags, and headed off to the church to meet some of the members they would be working for the remainder of the week. When they arrived, Megan was disappointed. This church is so small, she thought, how will we find enough kids to fill up each class? The others in the group must have been wondering the same thing because, all of the sudden, everyone was asking the same questions to each other that she had asked herself. The church was small, with a steeple that had a cross on top. Along side of the church, leading to the front entrance, was a newly built wheel-chair ramp. Out in the front of the church, a sign was on posts that read, “Beulah Lamb Baptist, Graystown, P.A.” All of the youth walked inside the old, small church, as their youth pastor, Dennis, led the way. He took them into the sanctuary where about 30 people were standing. As the people began to introduce themselves, Ashley, one of Megan’s friends whispered into Megan’s ear, “See that boy over there with the brown hair and the blue shirt on?” “Yeah,” Megan replied. “Why?” “He keeps looking at you and smiling. I think he likes you.” The girls began to giggle and everyone in their group turned to look at them. It was almost time for the boy to introduce himself. Megan paid close attention. “Hello. My name is Shawn Gottschalk.” After he introduced himself, more and more Gottschalk’s were called out. First Bill and Diane, the parents, then Shannon, Shane, Shea, Michelle, Shalan, Shad, Sheldon and then a baby named Miranda. Diane, the mom was holding baby Miranda over her stomach that looked as if it was bearing another child, which would be their tenth. Wow, Megan thought, that’s a large family. How could anyone live in a family with eleven other people? The pastor of the church was last to introduce himself. “Hello, I’m Pastor Bob, you can call me Bob. This here is the largest family you’ll ever meet. And they are our most finest members here at Beulah Baptist. We just want to say thanks to you all for coming up here from North Carolina to work with us this week in VBS! Anything you need, we will help you with. This is the sanctuary and that there is the bathroom,” he said as he pointed to a small door to the left of the podium.
